BODY SCLEROTHERAPY

Are you worried about varicose and spider veins on your legs? Are you wondering if a surgical procedure is the only solution for the treatment of varicose veins and the complete removal of varicose veins?

If you have varicose veinsor spider veins on your legs and you want to improve their appearance, body sclerotherapy is a leading treatment for thread vein removal.. This treatment is available at Clínica Rigo in Tarragona, and can provide the answer to your problem.

The body sclerotherapy is a leg vein and thread vein removal procedure designed to improve the appearance of spider veins. Specifically, our clinic uses the technique of the microfoam infiltration with polydacanol.

The treated veins will gradually be reabsorbed by the body and disappear. Body sclerotherapy is used for thread veins, spider veins and any of the smaller purple or blue veins.

Why use Body Sclerotherapy?

1

The procedure is painless and quick

The procedure has a duration of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The treatment is administered using small needles that do not cause pain or discomfort.

2

No downtime required

After treatment you will be able to resume your normal activities immediately. You will be informed of the necessary aftercare, such as wearing a compression stocking for a short period of time.

3

The treatment does not leave scars

With the body sclerotherapy treatment no cuts or incisions are required, so it does not leave scars. During the procedure, a tiny needle is used to inject a solution into each individual vein to make the vein walls stick together.

4

Faster results are achieved

Most patients notice the effects of leg vein treatment within a few weeks. However, as the body absorbs the veins over time, some will notice that the results continue for months after treatment.

5

It is effective and safe

Body sclerotherapy is a well-proven treatment to provide efficacy and safety to our patients. At Clinica Rigo in Tarragona, we only use the highest quality products and equipment to provide you with the best results.

Frequently asked questions about Body Sclerotherapy

Why do varicose veins appear in the veins?

There are one-way valves in the veins that promote the upward flow of blood towards the heart. Varicose veins occur when these valves stop working properly and blood flows in the wrong direction, causing the veins to swell and form varicose veins.

Varicose veins are often hereditary, but can also be caused by hormonal changes, obesity, ageing, prolonged standing and skin lesions on the legs.

What to expect after body sclerotherapy?

Although sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure, there are a few things to expect after the procedure. Body sclerotherapy has a short recovery time, and once the sclerotherapy treatment is complete, you will be able to resume your daily activities.

You may be asked to wear compression stockings for up to two weeks after treatment for larger varicose veins. For smaller varicose veins and thread veins, a light bandage will be applied which can be removed overnight.

You may get small bruises, red marks and some brown bruise-like pigmentation that fades over a couple of days. In some rare cases, it can take up to 18 months to disappear.

The full list of aftercare will be provided to you by Dra. Rigo. You should follow the aftercare advice to help speed up the healing process and minimise the risk of side effects.

Are the results of body sclerotherapy permanent?

The results of body sclerotherapy are permanent. The effects of the sclerosing agent are irreversible, meaning that once the veins dissolve, they disappear forever. Treatment does not act as a preventive measure against varicose or spider veins, but neither does it increase the likelihood of their recurrence.

Who is a suitable candidate for body sclerotherapy?

The ideal candidate for body sclerotherapy can be men or women with healthy skin. The treatment is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

In order to determine whether you are an ideal candidate for body sclerotherapy, it is necessary to book a consultation at Clínica Rigo in Tarragona. During the consultation, we will examine your case, check your medical history and recommend an appropriate treatment plan, while explaining the cost options, expected results and associated risks.

Is body sclerotherapy safe?

Thanks to our non-invasive treatments, the risk of pain or postoperative complications is minimal. However, as with any medical procedure, there is a slight possibility of minor adverse effects.

These may include bruising, redness and tenderness in the treated area and some patients may experience numbness. In very rare cases, patients may experience a slight skin blotchiness that may take a long time to disappear.

Home care recommended by Clinica Rigo

What protocol should I follow at home after the operation?

This is a list of care that our clinic recommends you to follow at home, so that your treatment develops properly and we achieve the expected success; it is very important that you observe these rules at all times and if you do not understand any procedure, do not hesitate to consult with your Follow-up Manager.

  • An interrogation and physical examination for vascular pathology is performed, including a mandatory Doppler ultrasound, which is referred to another department.
  • The varicose vein removal technique is carried out in consultation, using polidocanol 0.5, 1, 2 % as a sclerosing product, converting it into microfoam, a technique that is not very painful and with faster varicose vein removal results. The duration of the process is 20-45 minutes depending on each patient, the number of sessions is personalised.
  • It is very important that you walk for a minimum of half an hour straight after each treatment session, instead, if the weather is not good, you can do another exercise such as cycling.

It is also important that you do not do any strenuous physical exercise for 15 days after treatment.

  • If you have pain, you can take an analgesic such as paracetamol; never take acetylsalicylic acid derivatives during your treatment. It is also advisable to avoid the use of oral hormonal contraceptives.
  • If you have no choice but to stand all the time, try to keep moving, and when sitting, try to put your legs up.
  • If you feel that the support stocking is too tight or uncomfortable, you can pull it upwards or towards the sole of the foot. You should always keep it stretched and avoid creases, as these could hinder circulation and lead to chafing and/or injuries.
  • If you have irresistible itching or any other symptoms, don’t hesitate to call us immediately.
  • Raise your feet off the bed by about 8-10 cm to help venous return.
  • Gauze or dressings can be removed within 24-48 hours, taking care not to pull them. You can take a shower and get them wet, you’ll see that it won’t be difficult to remove them. From that day on, you can remove the stocking at night, although you should keep it on all day until your doctor tells you to do so.
  • Every day you must fulfil your mission: walk for one hour. Remember that there is nothing better for your vascular problem than exercise, good nutrition and wearing compression stockings all day long. You should always keep in mind that sedentary lifestyles and excess weight are some of the factors that contribute to vascular malfunction, so try to avoid them as much as possible. Similarly, avoid consuming toxic products, such as tobacco and alcohol, and drink at least two litres of water a day.
  • Daily use of your size L strong compression stockings will reduce your symptoms at the end of the day and considerably slow down the progression of your varicose veins.
  • Try to avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and high-heeled shoes, as they hinder venous return.
  • Avoid exposure to the sun, UV rays or heat sources for the duration of your treatment. If you go outside, it is recommended that you use your “full-screen” sun protection factor on exposed areas.
  • Use the creams and/or medicines recommended by your doctor correctly.

It is recommended not to fly during the following 48 hours.
